Quick-Frame
The Quick-Frame System is designed to provide maximum design flexibility as well as a low-cost, easy-to-configure framing system for on-site construction. It is approved for the installation of 45, 60, 90 and 120-minute Pyrobel fire and safety rated glazing.
When designing the Quick-Frame system for a 1-hour wall assembly, the vertical sill, jambs and head will only require one boxed 20 gauge steel stud and track. However, in a 2-hour wall and any time the glass will be stacked, then a double steel stud and track will be required for the mullions, sills, jambs and head.
Once the base frame is designed you have a multitude of options for the finish at the edges of the glass. The simple solution is the gypsum board finish and paint. In addition, wood molding of any species, steel and aluminum are approved to provide a more elegant solution.
Typically the Quick-Frame system for 60 and 120-minute wall systems is not limited in scope (height and width) by building codes. However, when exceeding 10 feet in height it is recommended that plans be approved by a structural engineer who will take into account the integrity and seismic considerations of the wall including the addition of the glazing.
Due to slight construction adjustments in the field it is always best to construct the frame prior to ordering the Pyrobel glazing. However, the 1" stop heights can normally make up for any slight variations.
Finally, building inspectors, fire marshals and other authorities having jurisdiction may not be familiar with this type of system. Be sure that you have discussed and obtained their approval prior to beginning your project. Sometimes it is helpful when discussing 60 and 120-minute systems to refer to them as transparent walls as they are tested to the same rigors as a standard 60 and 120-minute wall.
